Speaking to US branch of the ultra-left marginals, Syrian ambassador proposed direct talks with Israel. Assad repeatedly refused such talks. In fact, there is nothing much to talk about: Syria all but abandoned hope for the Golan Heights before the successive Israeli governments since Rabin stirred the issue. There is de facto peace with Syria now even in the absence of a paper treaty; Israeli governments offer the Golan Heights in exchange for just a PR stunt. Syria recognized Jewish thirst for a peace declaration and stepped up its demands, including access to the Lake Kinneret which would allow it water and maritime rights to half the lake. No peace treaty would force Syria to abandon its 800 missiles or convert that ancient enemy of Israel into a friend.
