Abbas voiced skepticism about prospects for peace with Netanyahu’s government because he—Netanyahu—rejects the two-state solution. Abbas’ comments were intended for gullible Westerners.
We know better. Six months ago, Olmert successfully tested Abbas’ intentions for peace by offering to sign a separation map which gave the Palestinians everything they have asked for; Abbas refused.
Weeks ago, Fatah’s leader (and Abbas’ likely successor) Dahlan called on Hamas not to recognize Israel because Fatah never did. Abbas concurred.
