Olmert declares an end of aliyah

With 50-70% of the world’s Jewry residing outside of Israel, Olmert’s announcement amounts to dismal failure of Zionist state. Why would American Jews emigrate to a Middle Eastern country full of Arabs, with quasi-socialist economy, totalitarian courts and government-controlled media, and bankrupt ideology?

interesting to compare this to an article put out almost exactly one year ago: June 29 2007:

3,500 North American Jews are to move to Israel in 2007

Aliyah figure is the highest since 1983. The immigrants are mostly young. Though the Jewish Agency boasts of the figure, the aliyah is almost entirely a success of Nefesh B’Nefesh religious NGO.

There’re no requirements for declaring aliyah yet. But the point is that it’s natural that Jews don’t feel like imigrating to Israel. For instance, when Russian Jews tried to go to their motherland, Israelis were very much against it. So, perhaps, we should speak about the alliyah of the select few. We can’t speak about requirements for declaring aliyah but we should speak about some evident factors to do so.
