The Lebanese government has issued a statement implying that Hezbollah is being folded into the government in case of a war with Israel. In the event of such a war, the Lebanese army and “the resistance” will jointly “liberate Lebanese territory.”
The statement is a major concession to Hezbollah by the Lebanese government, which has previously dissociated itself from Hezbollah’s military activities to avoid full-blown retaliation from Israel. The Lebanese policy of limited liability, under which the government declared itself not to be responsible for Hezbollah’s acts, allowed Lebanon to survive the 2006 war with Israel relatively unscathed.
