The NY Times reported on the White House’s legal preparations to kill Anwar al Awlaki: a year ago, a White House memo argued that assassinating a US citizen might be legal because Yemeni authorities had not prosecuted him.

On such grounds, any country is entitled to kill its dissidents overseas. Awlaki’s sermons certainly failed the crying-Fire-in-a-crowded-theater test of legally permissible limits on freedom of expression: they did not cause immediate harm, there was no clear relationship between Awlaki’s speech and anyone else’s terrorist actions. Over years, he inspired—and no one knows to what extent—a single American terrorist, which makes nonsense of the ‘clear and present danger’ argument.

Neither was he an operational chief of Al Qaeda who could be killed in an act of war.

Obama has introduced a $300 billion economic stimulus package, which will probably come closer to $400 billion. He claims that the package will create a million jobs, though as with his previous estimates, the actual number will be much lower. So realistically the price of this stimulus package comes to $500,000 or more per job—and those are mostly mundane jobs, such as in road construction. The cost of creating a job thus exceeds the total amount of tax revenue it brings in over the course of a lifetime.

The cost of a job in hi-tech is hovering at $100–$150,000. Even in its most successful realization, Obama’s plan wastes two-thirds of the money and creates uncompetitive jobs which the US could better import from the Third World.

Jewish groups, which keep a low profile on Iran and other really important issues, have mobilized to fight a proposed ban on circumcision in San Francisco.

In a secular state, we believe, they are wrong and the proponents of the ban are right. Jews argue that the ban violates freedom of religion. Nonsense. Adults are free to practice their religious beliefs to their own detriment, but not to the detriment of their children. Thus, the time-honored religious practice of sacrificing children would surely be outlawed. An eight-day-old child cannot be said to enjoy freedom of religion. In a secular state, he must be able to choose his own religion when grown up rather than having one imprinted on him by his parents.

Jews do not circumcise for health reasons. We circumcised even when the surgery was dangerous. A commandment observed for any reason other than fear of God is not counted as observed. So by circumcision we do not seek to confer health benefits on our children. In the world of modern hygiene there is no conceivable health advantage to circumcision, and it quite possibly leads to sexual disadvantages.

Overall, circumcision means harm to the child because of his parents’ religious beliefs. Often the parents are atheists, and harm their child simply as a matter of tradition.

We must observe commandments whether they are good or bad for us or for others. And so we must circumcise our children even though it is probably bad for them. But we cannot expect a secular state to uphold that right.

A US Federal Court ordered Iran to pay $300 million to the families of victims of Hamas terror—because Iran has supported Hamas.

By that logic, Israel is also guilty because our government reared Hamas to act against Fatah, and indeed through tax transfers passes more money to Hamas than Iran does.
The ruling is fundamentally silly because it opens the US to lawsuits, for example, by Afghanis injured by Karzai’s forces or Iraqi dissidents brutalized by Maliki, both American puppets. Every major government supports violence somewhere on the globe, but only the immediate perpetrators are guilty.

But the bigger problem is that world leaders can be sued for the same crimes in local courts. Leftist judges would be only too happy to establish their jurisdiction over military affairs.

Leftist media are making a great deal of noise over the Kaiser Foundation report, which puts the number of uninsured Americans at 50 million.

The truth is different. According to the report, 19% of non-elderly Americans are uninsured. But that figure misses the point: most medical expenses by far go to elderly people, so the data for younger people is largely irrelevant.

Even among younger Americans, the uninsured make up 16% of native citizens and 49% of non-citizens. The 16% figure corresponds to similar figure in the Health Status table: 16% of the uninsured are in excellent health. Naturally, native citizens in excellent health don’t bother buying health insurance.

The uninsured ratio is still lower among children: only 10% of children are uninsured, most of them presumably non-citizens. The greatest number of uninsured among all age groups is those aged 19–25. This is the healthiest group, which does not want insurance. Among working families, only 8% are uninsured, and the number would be still lower if we were to discount Hispanics, a whopping 34% of whom are uninsured.

For responsible adults, the health insurance situation can only be described as excellent.

Wikileaks published a secret report by a special analytical group working in the CIA. The report argues that because several American citizens have joined terrorist groups, the rest of the world might classify America as a country which exports terrorism and sever intelligence links with it.

The report begins by naming “Jewish, Muslim, and Irish” terrorist organizations, in just that order. The Jewish terrorist organization is, of course, Kach, a political party which has never committed an act of terror.

Governments and intelligence services throughout the world cooperate with real terror-exporting states: Libya, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, to name a few. It must take a mighty dose of hashish to claim that the United States would be ostracized over its association with a few outcasts.

The report poses a serious question in its preamble: why does an economically advanced and culturally tolerant state like the United States breed terrorists? The answer, which is not even alluded to in the report, is simple: the state does not breed them, they appear through the power of statistics. A population of 300 million is bound to contain a few people who are willing to commit acts of terrorism.

This also applies to Palestine. Miraculously, 99% of Palestinians may moderate their views and forgive the Jews for taking away what they think of as Arab land. The remaining one percent would still more than suffice to man a terrorist enterprise and render any peace agreement with Israel meaningless.

Wikileaks published a story about a group of murderers among the US troops in Afghanistan. These murderers formed a ‘kill team’ and shot random civilians for fun. The ringleader committed similar crimes during his tour in Iraq.

Wikileaks normally does a great job of exposing governments’ crimes and immorality. But some stories, this one included, run against national security goals. Hardly anyone in the West cares about Afghani militias murdering civilians in great numbers. Indeed, the American puppet Karzai brought bloody criminals from among the Mujahedeen into his government. So the story guarantees that highly disproportionate blame will fall on the US troops, and that there will be increased hatred and non-cooperation.

The murderers were properly prosecuted at the time the story was leaked. It thus served not justice, but only propaganda.

It is incredible that the US intelligence services are so much afraid of liberals that they cannot shut down a Web site which endangers American troops on the ground.
