Olmert, Abbas abandoned their far-fetched idea of the full return to 1967 borders, and again agreed on territorial exchange: Israel would retain major settlement blocs and compensate Palestinians with Jewish land in other areas.

In the Wall Street Journal’s op-ed, Abbas accepted that “physical separation of our two peoples [becomes] increasingly impossible.” This is obvious: neither Israel can exist as an eight-mile-wide state, not Palestine as a patchwork of villages. Evacuation of the militant Jewish settlements such as Kiryat Arba or Yitzhar is next to impossible. So we have to expel the Palestinians.

The currently discussed plan offers Palestinian enemies 98.1% of the West Bank. That area includes Jewish land far east of the separation barrier which was meant as the worst-case border. In other words, Palestinians will receive the land inside the Small Israel, including such major towns as Maaleh Adumim.
Palestinians will gain water rights to the Dead Sea and Kineret for predatory pumping.
Ramon, a know-it-all, remarked that undoubtedly no settlements, even those east of the separation barrier, would remain under Israeli sovereignty.
The massive plan of Israeli evacuation is actually very good, and I wonder whether Olmert means it this way. A plan which would leave the settlement blocs within Israel and evict only a handful of faraway settlements is possible to implement, but the current plan, which proposes the eviction of 200,000 Jews, cannot be carried out.

Reportedly, Livni agreed to sign an agreement with Palestinians to give them Jerusalem, part of the Dead Sea for predatory pumping, and accept 20,000 of the fourth-generation “refugees”, who would in due course bring to Israel hundreds of thousands of their relatives in family reunion schemes.
Israel has a criminal statute which condemns of treason anyone who conspires to cede Jewish land to foreign entities, but who’s going to sentence Livni?

US consul discloses talks on Jerusalem

US Consul General Walles said that Israeli-Palestinian talks on Jerusalem are an ongoing matter. Israeli government officials furiously protested the disclosure but not its substance. Walles also related Rice’s demand for pre-1967 borders - which even Ben Gurion and Rabin have rejected.
Walles’ disclosure is really no news. Rabin, Barak, Netanyahu, and Olmert all agreed to substantially the same plan.
The current plan is worst of all as it would place the Temple Mount under international jurisdiction. We can eventually throw out Muslims from there, but hardly the UN reps.

Israeli prime minister delivered to McCain and Obama his terms of any future agreement with Palestinians. The draft includes full demilitarization of Palestine, refusal from all foreign military alliances, and Israeli control over Palestinian airspace, borders, and major roads.
Palestinians would hardly accept so humiliating terms, but more importantly, the demands are empty. Once the peace agreement is signed and Palestine, say, acquires rockets in the direct violation of the agreement, Israel would do nothing just as she doesn’t act now when Hamas and Hezbollah violate the respective ceasefires by multiplying their arsenals. The US guarantees would be worthless as always, like in 1970 when Nixon Administration imposed ceasefire on Israel in the War of Attrition but did not react when Egypt immediately violated the ceasefire by moving its SAM batteries to the Suez. Those batteries allowed Egypt the tactical victory in the opening days of the 1973 war.

The Israeli master politician made a formal offer to Palestinian enemies: 6% of the land in Negev near Gaza and 93% of Judea and Samaria, that’s the entire West Bank except settlement blocs. Israel also agreed to divide herself with a corridor so that Palestinian enemies can travel freely from the West Bank into Gaza.
The small print is more important: the deal can only be implemented after the PA asserts control over its territory - that is, never.
The Palestinian Authority rejected th 93% deal as “unacceptable.”

Unable to claim the laurels of making peace with Israel, Palestinian politicians increasingly switch to domestic affairs. Facing elections, Abbas tries to position himself as the intra-Palestinian peacemaker and sets out to reconcile with Hamas.
Other influential figures, including Palestinian “prime minister” Fayad and chief negotiator Erakat attempt to score points with domestic supporters by tough anti-Israeli stance. Unable to deliver economic improvement, Fayad gained applause by urging the EU to avoid Israeli integration. Erakat postures tough by being in flexible in negotiations with Israel, especially on the settlement blocs.
Assad, who survived a putsch three months ago, is not interested in the Golan Heights. Decades of anti-Israeli propaganda made Syrians unwilling for peace with Israel, and Assad won’t gain much by returning the Golan Heights. He recalls that many Egyptians questioned even Sadat’s peace with Israel which got Egypt the Sinai for nothing.
In all failed states, demagogy and hateful incitement are the shortest path for politicians fishing for votes.

A few days after the new investigation against Olmert, which is trumpeted as devastating, the prime minister suddenly changed his mind and during today’s meeting with Abbas announced that Israel is ready to “tangible changes” in the West Bank, a code phrase for evacuating Jewish settlements where more than 200,000 people live.
Olmert’s announcement was expected after Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told Rice yesterday that settlements are not obstacle to peace, just like Gush Katif was not. Tzipi meant that the Jewish government won’t hesitate destroying Israeli villages in Judea and Samaria just as it destroyed Gush Katif in Gaza.
Olmert’s change of mind is of the same stock as Ariel Sharon’s. Arik’s election campaign ridiculed the Labor’s program of unilateral disengagement from Gaza, but shortly after being elected, under the weight of criminal charges, Sharon adopted the very same platform. In return, the leftists who control Israeli security establishment provided Sharon with virtual safety net against criminal prosecution.
Shimon Peres, who certainly orchestrated the new round of criminal investigation against Olmert, announced his belief in Olmert’s innocence, signaling acceptance of his part of the deal: as long as Olmert cooperates with leftists on withdrawalfrom Judea and Samaria, he will be free from prosecution.
It is hardly coincidental that the new charges against Olmert were announced immediately before the meeting with Rice and involve Jewish American businessman. The US Administration likely helped Israeli leftists to dig out the new criminal allegations against Olmert.
The Labor and Kadima parties are able to arrange a Knesset majority to approve unilateral disengagement from Judea and Samaria.
In order to go on with the peace process, Israel would have to accept ceasefire with Hamas. The peace process will have to go on very fast while the ceasefire still stands.
