Speaking of Syria, the UN rep Susan Rice says that the Syrian peace plan has not failed yet, and that it is still too early to evaluate its performance. Despite, we should add, the hundreds killed by government troops and significant numbers dead in terrorist attacks by the democratic opposition. Before her appointment, Rice was an avid defender of human rights and an opponent of Israel, but in the UN she has become quite diplomatic.

IEDs recently blew up a car wash in Aleppo and similar civilian installations throughout Syria, and now the United States is under increasing pressure to clarify its stance in the war on terror. It is now clear that the ‘Free Syria’ forces fighting Assad are similar to him in their penchant for violence, and perhaps even more ready to employ terrorism for their objectives. Add to this their political support from the Muslim Brotherhood and paramilitary association with ex-Libyan rebels (themselves connected to Al Qaeda), and Washington’s choices look rather uncomfortable.

For our part, the choice is clear: civil war in Syria is the best scenario for Israel, while Assad remaining in power is the second-best.

The Friends of Syria, a meeting of Western and Arab powers in Turkey, recognized the Syrian rebels as the legitimate government just as Assad suppressed the revolt.

Clearly, the NATO powers wouldn’t support a lost cause, and the fact that the revolt is dead is well-known to them. Thus, they must be counting on the tide turning.

This move puts NATO squarely in opposition to Iran and Russia, which will be supporting Assad. But even if Russia activates its air defenses over Syria (the radar is already activated), the pauperized KGB state is no match for the combined strength of NATO arms and Saudi money. And it remains rather improbable that the Chinese would intervene directly.

There is concern this morning that those two Iranian ships that docked in Tartus were doing a two-way shipping run, having restocked Assad with munitions that he needed. There are now reports that Syrian security dressed like dock workers transferred to an Iranian supply ship materials that originated from Russian ships.

They only odd part about these supplies was that they were handled by Syrian security people disguised as dock workers. There is some indication that a Russian was supervising them, but that cannot yet be confirmed.

Israeli media are full of heart-rending reports of the savagery of Assad forces in Homs. Though they are undoubtedly conducting an anti-guerrilla operation rather than some sort of genocide, clearly a lot of civilians have died there.

Now the question is, why should any Jew be concerned about that? Those people are our sworn enemies; they have been attacking us for the past 3,500 years, and they have started three wars against us in recent history. They have also accumulated about 1,400 mid-range rockets specifically to kill our civilians.

Many ‘progressive’ rabbis argue mistakenly that we are religiously prohibited from cheering for the deaths of our enemies. That is incorrect. It is true when the enemy in question is one of us, a fellow Jew with whom we merely have a dispute. On the other hand, the righteous rejoice in the deaths of true enemies, stamping their feet in blood of the wicked.

Be that as it may, while cheering enemy deaths may be questionable, our enemies certainly deserve no compassion.

The White House claims it refuses to arm Syrian rebels because the weapons might fall into the hands of extremists there.

If the extremists play such an important role, why support the anti-Assad movement at all? Why not supply the extremists with reasonable quantities of weaponry, which is not very advanced compared to Hezbollah’s and Hamas’ stockpiles? Who, if not the US, airlifted Al Qaeda-linked rebels from Libya to Syria via Turkey?

In reality, the US refuses to arm Syrian rebels because it wants to check Saudi influence in the region, and to preserve Assad as a conduit to Tehran.

The White House reiterated its refusal to call the Syrian situation a civil war, which it undoubtedly is. Their problem is that taking sides in the complex environment of civil war would look unreasonable, while supporting a popular insurrection against a tyrant is palatable.

Reportedly, the US has not yet intervened in Syria directly because of the absence of anything resembling a united opposition there. Deposing Assad now would certainly lead to Arabs butchering one another and looting Assad’s arsenals.
