Lebanon establishes diplomatic ties with Palestinian state

While Israelis like ostriches hid their collective head in sand and pretend to control the territories, the rest of the world gradually recognizes Palestine as an independent state. Many non-Arab countries have their diplomatic missions in Ramallah, and Lebanon now took a further step of allowing Palestinian embassy in Beirut.

After Shamir’s government allowed Palestinian elections, it had been only logical to permit them a legislative council, government which conducts foreign policy, and police and practically the army.

Palestinians don’t rush to proclaim independence because it would stop much of the aid and refugee assistance and subject them to Israeli military rather than police-level reprisals for terrorist acts.

Saleh Aridi, a leader of pro-Syrian Druzes in Lebanon, was blown in his car. Normally, it is anti-Syrian politicians who are killed in Lebanon.
Aridi’s assassination is meant to jump start clashes between Israeli-aligned Walid Jumblatt and his pro-Syrian rivals.
Hezbollah might be interested in Druzes fighting each other, and Israel would love to see Druzes fighting Hezbollah - so it is unclear yet who has killed Aridi.

Shebaa Farms is a patch of land of some strategic importance on Israel-Syria-Lebanon border; Israel captured it from Lebanon but held as a bargaining chip for Syria. Syria refuses the farms, and Hezbollah legitimizes its struggle against Israel by the Shebaa occupation.
Though the government imagines that Hezbollah would lose any pretext for fighting Israel after receiving the farms, that is not so as top Hezbollah clerics have recently called for liberation of the former Shiite villages in Galilee. Returning the Shebaa Farms to Hezbollah would greatly boost its reputation in the Islamic world.

Der Spiegel earlier reported that Mughniye was killed by members of Syria intelligence community for betraying their putsch plans to Assad. The conspiracy was likely assisted by Israel.
The ABC reports is probably true. The last time Israel assassinated Hezbollah’s leader, there were hundreds of Jewish casualties.
