After more than a decade of strained relations following Hamas’ attempts to sabotage the monarchy, Mashaal visited the Jordanian king for a long discussion. The bottom line was Mashaal’s announcement that Palestine is for Palestinians and Jordan is for Jordanians. In theory, this is a pledge to refrain from meddling in Jordan, whose population is 3/4 Palestinian.

Jordan’s Abdullah thus hopes to secure himself against yet another Arab Spring revolution, which in his country would be spearheaded by the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. Abdullah is especially concerned about Assad’s survival, expecting the Syrian ruler to retaliate for his treacherous support of the rebels by aiding the MB in Jordan.

But Mashaal’s promise is worth nothing. Hamas won’t sit on the sidelines while the Brotherhood overthrows the Jordanian monarchy, and neither would he ignore Palestinian demographic dominance in Jordan.

The first stage of the Red-Dead will transport just 200 million cubic meters of water annually. Half of that volume will be delivered to Jordanian desalination plants, and the balance will go into the Dead Sea.

But about half the Dead Sea belongs to Jordan, and after a peace treaty with the Palestinians Israel will own only a quarter of the sea. Thus we will pay close to 300 million dollars to supply Jordan with water and to refill the sea, of which we own only a small part.

The White House is pressing the Jordanian king for democratic reforms. If implemented, these reforms would ensure a Palestinian majority in the Jordanian parliament. The Muslim Brotherhood will enter the government as the major force. Palestinians in the parliament will change the makeup of the Jordanian army, which hitherto has relied on Bedouins to guard the monarchy against the Palestinian majority. Jordan will end up embroiled in a civil war pitting the Palestinian Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood against the Bedouins.

The democratization of Jordan would leave the Palestinians with two states in the West Bank and Jordan, and possibly a third one in Gaza. The Muslim Brotherhood will dominate Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and possibly Palestine.

Obama’s policies have cost the US yet another faithful ally, Jordan. The local monarch sensed that he is next in line for removal by the US-backed Arab Spring, which seeks to put Islamist democracies in place of secular authoritarians. Jordan faces no military threat now, as it did in decades past when it needed US protection against Iraq, Syria, and Israel. So Jordan started accepting vast subsidies from Saudi Arabia, which come with a small price: joining the Saudi-led Middle East bloc.

Jordan has embarked on a legal crusade to make Israel return ancient metal books with Christian imagery believed to have been smuggled out of Jordan by Bedouins.

Israeli archeologists believe that the books are forgeries. Moreover, they belong to an Israeli Arab rather than a state. Besides, Jews have no interest in holding Christian artifacts. So there is every reason to return the books to Jordan.

A bigger problem is that upon signing a peace treaty with Jordan, Peres gave away Jewish scrolls of immense archeological value for the flimsy reason that they had been discovered in Jordan. If that were reason enough, the Louvre and the British Museum would be left without a single foreign item.

Large anti-government protests took place recently in Jordan. The relentless US pressure pushed the king to adopt free-market policies while at the same time liberalizing his country compared to other Arab autocracies. In a corrupt state like Jordan, free-market reforms worsen the economic situation for most citizens, and liberalism allows them to express their grief.

Monarchy cannot survive in the modern world, and liberal monarchy is too weak to preserve itself against popular will. When the Jordanian monarchy eventually falls—and it will not fall just yet—democratic elections will bring Palestinian majority to power and transform Jordan into a bastion for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Which is similar to the effect American democratization produced in Lebanon and Gaza.

The Egyptian government allowed a Gaza aid flotilla to dock in El Arish and transfer its cargo to Gaza by land. The Egyptians allowed only humanitarian items, and barred even power generators donated by Iran. So far this is good: Egypt is cooperating with Israel in closing up Gaza.

But some of the activists barred from entering Gaza were Jordanian citizens. Normally, Jordan would deal quietly with its Hamas supporters, but not this time.

Ever since Netanyahu’s botched attempt on Mashaal, Jordan has been distancing itself from Israel. That Jordan is allowing its citizens on the Gaza convoy is yet another sign that it has opted to integrate into the Arab world rather than maintain its relatively strong alliance with Israel. Thus ends the aberrant period of decent relations between Israel and the Arab state of Jordan that has existed since 1967.
