New US sanctions against Iran are symbolic only

Shortly before the start of talks with Iran, the US Senate approved new sanctions. Several factors suggest the move is merely symbolic.

Any real sanctions against the ayatollahs would have surely derailed the talks, as Iranians, in their usual manner, would protest by walking out.
The Senate’s support for the sanctions was unanimous, which suggests that the sanctions were unacceptable to no one.
New sanctions follow the US drive to water down the existing sanctions by providing exemptions to EU countries and accepting minor reductions in oil purchases from Iran by Asian economies.

Iran already circumvents the sanctions on its oil shipping company by hiring foreign tankers, and it has established its ability to sell its entire oil output to third-world countries unconcerned with American sanctions.

Iran competes with the US in aiding North Korea

In the Egyptian presidential debate the allegedly moderate Fotouh called Israel an enemy, while his opponant Moussa more generously spoke of our country as an adversary. That’s after thirty-five years of peace. Both candidates promised to review the peace treaty.

It is now clear that the ‘Free Syria’ forces fighting Assad are similar to him in their penchant for violence, and perhaps even more ready to employ terrorism for their objectives. At the same time there will be a major Iranian trade delegation in India to increase trade, including oil sales. It has been suggested that the mere appearance of a reduction in Iranian oil purchases will be enough to get the waiver
This would be the same situation that exists with China, which pays lip service to US sanctions and still benefits from access to cheaper Iranian oil.

Amr Moussa has declared the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty dead. While he would not (indeed, cannot) denounce the treaty, Moussa promised to abide first by the terms of the Arab League peace initiative, which requires Israel to withdraw to the 1948 armistice line, surrender Jerusalem, and allow Palestinian ‘refugees’ to return.

Moussa lied when he said that the treaty was conditioned on the creation of a Palestinian state; there are many memoirs that show how irrelevant that issue was for Sadat.

Iran plans to send animals into space

The Iranian Space Agency has announced plans to send the Fajr satellite into space within a month and to launch another rocket with animals aboard within a few months after that.

Sending animals into space is a way to test a missile’s reentry capability, which is crucial for ICBMs.

Iran’s missile program is far more advanced than those of North Korea and Pakistan.
