It is very fitting for a country which upholds the rights of its Arab enemies and African illegals to milk the state to turn next to the rights of… chickens. The Agricultural Ministry wanted to increase the minimum size for chicken cages threefold, but human rights groups opposed the bill because the changes wouldn’t take place immediately.

We should also consider the human rights of the malaria mosquito, which suffered genocide at our hands 70 years ago. Meaningful restitution, pro-active demographic measures, and affirmative-action universities can bring justice to the aboriginal population of the Holy Land marshes.

Africans protest, view government aid as racism

In the middle of the day, while the rest of the population worked, a couple of thousand Ethiopians protested discrimination.

They did not make known the exact nature of the discrimination, but apparently they want more money. Three decades ago they were declared adherents to Judaism, having practiced a vaguely similar religion for centuries without being ethnically Jewish. They were brought to Israel, where the government naturally settled them in compact communities—mainly because of their huge cultural, educational, and generally developmental distinction from the rest of the population. The subsequent decades have seen no integration of Ethiopians into Israeli society, but it would be a mistake to attribute their distinctive character to government policies; rather, a Bronze Age population cannot be integrated into modern society in a single generation.

After gender segregation, price tag graffiti, and other similarly unimportant issues, leftists have found yet another cause that allows them to avoid focusing on the real issues facing Israel. This time they targeted a group of Jews in Kiryat Malachi who allegedly refused to rent their houses to Ethiopians.

The residents did not act, apparently, out of religious conviction or the common sense that Ethiopians have little to do with Jewish people. Their concern was purely social: they did not want a large underclass population in their area, especially since Ethiopians tend to live by dozens in a single apartment.

This a cultural issue, not racism.

Israeli socialism wins another milestone

The government has approved free childcare from the age of three. To finance that socialist deviation, the cabinet nixed moving military bases to the south, even though they have become an easy target for possible rocket attacks from the West Bank. A railroad through the Jezreel Valley was also nixed, which is a good thing for the peaceniks.

A scandal rages over the theft of personal data on all Israelis from the Labor Ministry. The theft exposes a major problem with biometric passports and computer data in general, but this current case is actually not so serious. The stolen data included addresses, birth dates, and familial connections. With possible exception of addresses, the data is innocuous, and there is no reason for the government to refrain from posting it on the Internet (although perhaps people should be given an opt-out option). At the very least, it makes finding one’s distant relatives much easier.

OECD rated Israel the 41st country in natural sciences exams among students. Though the Israeli index is weighed down by Arabs, the scores are low even among middle-class Jews.

Mishaps led to fire and sustain it

As Israel suffers its worst-ever forest fire in the north, some lessons are to be learned.

The fire has so far overtaken 5,000 acres – a rather small area. Other countries routinely see wildfires hundred times as large. Israeli firefighters and Home Front Command proved unprepared for the emergency. Despite the frequent occurrence of fires in the north, they had no mobilization plans. Firefighters from across the country were not called to the site immediately, and equipment haven’t been brought.

Ditching is not being done even today. Is it too dangerous for bulldozers, of which the army has plenty? Bomb the forest, then, in order to create an empty area to stop the fire. Backfires were not started, either.

Despite years of drought, underbrush was not being cleared with controlled fires. This technique was adopted in the United States many years ago, but was lost on Israeli authorities.

The United States, as usual, was quick with pompous declarations of support, but even the ever-lazy Greeks sent their firefighting equipment faster.

The fire came close to Haifa, whose chemical factories and refineries present a greater threat than the Iranian nukes.
