Protesters who poured through the Israeli-Syrian border made no attempt to defuse the mines. They did not send heavy machinery forward or thin their ranks. The demonstrators were not martyrs, they did not expect to die.

Nor where they ignorant of the minefields, which everyone in the area knows about, and which are clearly marked. Moreover, Israeli Druze shouted to them about the danger. Yet the Syrians crossed into Israel without fear.

They seem to have had inside information about the empty minefields. Such information could conceivably have come from Syrian intelligence, but it is no less likely that it came from Israeli peaceniks, who are prominent in the security establishment.

And was the same hand not responsible for the bizarre order given to the guards of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo not to shoot at the mob that broke into the embassy a week ago and was meters away from the intelligence offices?
