Israel capitulates in the hunger strike incident

Though the government is trying to present the deal as if the Palestinian inmates had ended their hunger strike in exchange for the bodies of a hundred dead terrorists, that is not the case. Among several points of the agreement, a single point matters: all the Arabs being held in administrative detention will be released after their six-month term ends.

Very few of them can be charged in criminal proceedings, which is why these enemies were being held in administrative detention in the first place. Effectively, Israel has agreed to release all of them, and came close to repealing administrative detention altogether.

The Israeli government is reportedly in the final stage of negotiations to exchange a Tarabin tribe Bedouin named Ouda who is being held in Egypt on the charges of espionage. He will be exchanged for sixty-three Egyptian criminals, smugglers, and terrorists held in Israeli prisons.

Israel has not conducted significant spying operations in Egypt since the Camp David treaty. Jailed in 1999, Ouda had no targets to spy upon. So either the charges are entirely baseless, or he was an unimportant spy. Otherwise, the government would have exchanged him much sooner.

One possible reason for exchanging the Bedouin is that the ruling party is looking for electoral support from the large Tarabin tribe.

For reasons that escape us, silly Jews are concerned about that hunger strike, and work frantically with the PA to return the inmates to their food trays. More terrorists will probably be released because of this. Why prevent our enemies from committing suicide?

Hana ash-Shalabi, a PIJ terrorist, was among those detained by IDF soon after their release in the infamous Shalit deal. Following the example of another terrorist who was released from administrative detention after a hunger strike, she also stopped eating. A few dozen Arab inmates followed her example.

As usual, there is international condemnation, and Israel is considering accommodating her.

Which raises a question. We are mostly glad to kill terrorists. Those are not random Arabs, nor even petty criminals, but soldiers committed to killing us. So whether they die on the battlefield, in their houses, or in our jails should be quite irrelevant. And if jailed terrorists want to starve themselves to death, we should provide every encouragement and assistance for them to do so.

Israeli media are slamming Abbas for appointing a terrorist as his advisor. The terrorist in question led Force 17, Arafat’s guard and assassination squad; he was released in ‘exchange’ for Shalit.

But Israel cooperated closely with Force 17 for years, and Israeli leaders, notably Peres, often convene with Marwan Barghouti in his cell.

Rabbi Yossi Elitzur made headlines by co-authoring Torah ha-Melech, an academic book on halacha that dares to tell the truth about Jewish methods of war. He has now issued a new halachic ruling which would be pretty commonsense if we did not live in a warped society. According to Rabbi Elitzur, it is preferable to kill a terrorist on sight than to call the police, who would eventually exchange him. For that, Rabbi Elitzur faces legal problems.

Incidentally, the government acted very similarly to the rabbi when police warned the terrorists being released that any further terrorism on their part would have ‘consequences.’ In other words, extrajudicial killing.
