The relationship lasted for a long time, and the woman often drove to the mayor’s apartment by herself. The only way to describe their relationship other than love is prostitution, since the woman received benefits at work in exchange for sex.

Justice Minister Neeman introduced a Basic Law bill which would allow the Knesset to pass a law by a slight majority of 65, votes even if the High Court had previously overturned it.

Neeman’s measure would seem strange in any civilized state: if the Court rules a law unconstitutional, it is unconstitutional regardless of the number of people or MKs who support it. But the story is different in Israel, where as everyone knows, the Supreme Court annuls laws based on its vague definitions of human dignity and the like, rather than the actual wording of basic laws, which are the Israeli equivalent of a constitution.

Leftist MKs, who depend on the court to prevent conservative legislation from coming into being, oppose the new bill.

The power attorney took over his case only after Katsav lost his Supreme Court appeal and went to jail. Such a case would ordinarily appear to be lost, but Sheftel, as usual, works judicial miracles.

So he produced a videotape showing Katsav attending a public meeting many years ago, just at the time Aleph claimed he was busy raping her.

So far, the Attorney General opposes a re-trial based on this new evidence.

Israel’s High Court takes a bizarre pride in being the most activist judicial body in the world, inventing civil rights even in the absence of constitutional precedent, based on vague definitions of human dignity.

No longer satisfied with inventing rights for humans, the court has blocked exports of macaque monkeys to the United States for medical experiments. Now, the US has strong animal protection laws, and there is no doubt that the monkeys would be used properly, though of course cruelly. If nothing else, the high cost of macaques guarantees that they won’t be killed for food or in senseless experiments.

The only question remaining is, whom do medical researchers have to experiment on?

In a truly scandalous ruling, the High Court rejected a petition to strike down the Gaza amnesty law, which pardoned most disengagement protestors. The problem with that ruling is that all Jewish justices voted in favor of the amnesty while the Arab justices voted against it.

The only conceivable reason for an Arab judge to vote against the amnesty law is that he views the settlers from a purely Arab perspective, and so supports the most extreme punishments for them, including criminal charges for merely voicing opposition to disengagement.

The court merely convicted them of “death by negligence,” despite the fact that they were very careful and deliberate about murdering their victim. The maximum sentence for “death by negligence” is three years, and they can realistically be expected to serve two years or less.

The Supreme Court has acquitted journalist Ilana Dayan of libel. Seven years ago Channel 2 aired her program accusing an IDF captain of intentionally killing a thirteen-year-old Arab girl. The girl, mind you, approached the military installation at a time when suicide bombings were common.

The journalist was acquitted because she had reasonable evidence to support her accusations. To support that, the court pointed out that the officer was was under indictment at the time on similar charges. But that’s a chicken-and-egg question! He was indicted specifically because of media hysteria, and later acquitted.

Now leftist journalists have learned that they are safe from prosecution for libel as long as they can push law enforcement to investigate their allegations. And so they will become ever more aggressive in pressing their false accusations against soldiers.

An Israeli court ordered insurer Clalit to pay 15 million shekels in punitive damages for alleged negligence because a gynecologist examining a pregnant woman failed to suggest testing for a very rare disease, which led to her giving birth to stillborn baby.

This is the bane of the US medical system, where doctors test for everything out of fear of negligence claims. In reality, medical work always involves risk, and running to avoid marginal hazards greatly increase the costs and inconvenience for the vast majority of the population.

The Clalit case will push hospitals to conduct unreasonably extensive testing and drive up medical costs for all Israelis.

For a decade, Israel has endured one of the most absurd trials imaginable. Mustafa Dirani, a terrorist from Amal, was released in one of the prisoner exchanges. He has subsequently sued the Israeli government in Israeli courts because he was sodomized during the investigation.

There is no doubt that he was threatened, beaten, and sodomized with a baton—not for the sheer fun of it, but in order to extract information about Ron Arad, who had been captured by Dirani’s colleagues. Logically, if we are prepared to release a thousand Arabs to bring back one Jew, and a very bad Jew at that, then that is all the more reason we should be allowed to torture an Arab to bring back another Jew.

Now a member of Unit 504 has filed a countersuit against the government, claiming that he was fired because of Dirani’s allegations even though he was not the one who tortured the terrorist. It is one thing that the government submitted to the court’s dictates, but a totally different thing that good interrogators are actually being punished for doing their jobs rescuing a Jew.

The citizenship law bars naturalization for the Palestinian spouses of Israeli Arabs. Such naturalization would immediately add two hundred thousand Palestinians to the Israeli population and open the door to many more of them.

The court said correctly that the right to marital life does not have to be realized within the borders of Israel, and the Palestinians can live just as happily in their own state ten miles away.

The Chief Judge was among the dissenters.
