The spate of recent motorcycle shootings in France, which culminated in an attack on a Jewish school, cannot be a work of individual Muslims or a homegrown cell. Despite its seeming simplicity, an attack of this type actually takes much planning, if only to ensure the perpetrators’ escape.

The logical suspect would be Algeria, but in the current situation Iran or Syria have much more interest in striking at the soft targets of the Judeo-Christian underbelly. Iran is unlikely to risk such an escalation. Assad, on the other hand, who has by now lost touch with reality, might well be the culprit.

The EU’s foreign policy chief called on Israel do to everything possible to preserve health of one Khader Adnan, who for two months has been protesting his administrative detention by refusing to take food.

Administrative detention would be unacceptable in a peaceful democratic state, but in time of war it is similar to internment of POWs. The US uses it in Guantanamo and other foreign prisons, and indeed administrative imprisonment without charges is sometimes the only way to deal with enemies. What is really shameful is that Israel’s government also applies this wartime measure against conservative Jews.

As for Adnan, he has at his disposal an easy way to preserve his health: start eating.

As everyone expected, Israel signed a $1 billion deal to purchase training jets from Italy rather than South Korea, even though Korean terms were somewhat more favorable.

Under the deal, a private Israeli company will buy the jets, and the IAF will be renting them – a highly unusual agreement in the military practice of any country, though certainly interesting as we’ve been arguing for the privatization of military services.

It was outright silly that, for political reasons, Italy was chosen rather than South Korea, one of the world’s top arms importers. Besides, what good is Italian political goodwill if that country would follow US orders in any case?

The government tries to replace Turkey with Greece as our strategic partner, to which effect we signed yet another set of mutual defense papers. But it would be foolish for Israel to count on Greece, a country with long tradition of anti-Semitism which even spilled into Ukraine a century ago, when Greek traders instigated an anti-Jewish pogrom in Odessa. Anti-Semitism in Greece is as strong today as then, and freely expressed. Contrast that with Turkey, where Jews have always been generally safe from European persecutions.

Greece cooperates with Israel only so far as Turkey threatens Cyprus’ gas field, which is shared by Israel. The moment Turkey accepts Greek exploration rights to the gas field, Greece will have no good reason to associate with the Jewish state.

Israeli media are paying much attention to the French Foreign Ministry’s summoning of an Israeli diplomat over the injuries sustained by the French consul in Gaza during our attack on Hamas last night.

That is a standard diplomatic procedure that does not reflect the French attitude toward the conflict or the value they place on Israeli or Arab casualties. France generally ignores Gazan deaths, but has to express formal concern when its quasi-diplomatic employees are injured.

After barely suppressing this week’s urban riots, the British government is working on rescinding some of the austerity measures it introduced in the wake of the economic collapse of its quasi-socialist economy.

In the politically correct world, the riots are being blamed on economic hardship. Nonsense. Dirt-poor Jews in Eastern Europe did not riot in the nineteenth century. Poor Jews in present-day Israel do not set up tent camps—but relatively affluent leftists do.

Which answers the question of what caused the British riots. The immigrants are suddenly affluent compared to their previous standard of living. They do not have to work for living, but are content with subsidies. They have plenty of leisure time. Combine that with youthful radicalism and the lack of liberal traditions in their ethnic and religious cultures, which creates a feeling of impunity—and you have riots.

But instead of admitting that those immigrants are a culturally foreign element, that they are economic spongers who have to be repressed or evicted, the government contemplates more subsidies for them—which will only whet their appetites.
