Mubarak and ObamaThe Egyptian president chose the best available ways to deal with anti-government riots. He replaced the government, unleashed throngs of his supporters to attack his opponents, made the army visible on the streets without actually shooting protesters, and launched an anti-Israeli campaign in the state-controlled media to unify the nation.

Meanwhile, the US attitude toward Mubarak, including threats to cut off aid, remains so unbelievably bad that it raises the question of whether Obama is saying one thing publicly to the protesters and another thing to Mubarak privately.

Mubarak’s promise not to run for reelection should be taken with a grain of salt.

The heads of the governments of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK issued a joint statement calling on Mubarak to accept a coalition government.

‘Only a quick and orderly transition to a broad-based government will make it possible to overcome the challenges Egypt is now facing,’ wrote the cuckoos. Who in his right mind can believe that a government which includes the Muslim Brotherhood would actually ‘overcome the challenges’ rather than plunge Egypt into religious totalitarianism, and eventually into the war with Israel?
