Drafting haredim: government seeks penalties against haredim rather than the army

As the coalition debates about the Tal Law alternative become ever more heated, the government is studying only two options: imposing penalties on individual haredim for dodging the draft, or penalizing their institutions, such as yeshivas. The second option is clearly illegal as it would constitute collective punishment, which the High Court forbids in relation to Arabs.

Still, the government ignores the only options which would make the law enforceable: to make the army truly Jewish, which would mean kosher food, separation of the sexes (there is little need for women in the army, in any case), and the censorship of extremist anti-religious propaganda.
