How do you know how haShem will reaveal the person? There is a huge hint in tractat Sanhedrin. It states there will be sounds. Similar to the story of Moshe, thunder will be the sign. Thunder on a clear day, once at night, twice the next day in three different places in Israel. Then clouds will roll in quickly from all directions and breifly rain in Sefat and the clouds will quickly roll out back to a clear day This is how it will work. So He 'drops us a note'! Textual sources give us hints and clues, but when the actual event occurs, only a handful will initially know, then he will be concealed for a time, and revealed (Rambam), as you say, when the time is right. He brings all Jews back to Torah, rebuilds the Temple and gathers together dispersed Jewry to Israel. How he appears, supernaturally or naturally, suddenly or gradually, depends on our merit. Merit also influences the sequence of events leading up to and through his arrival. Hashem doesn't exactly "drop a note," but grants an exceptional tzaddik the soul of Moshiach, dispatching it, so to speak, when the time is right.
