Danny,
After reading your comment on this page, I've decided to discount everything I've read on the site so far. Conspiracy theories are the refuge of the paranoid. Israel has more than its fair share of disorder, "yehiyeh beseder" mentality and incompetence, which makes your theory ridiculous.

It's already too much to bear that most of the Arab world suffers from European-induced anti-semitic conspiracies. Why join such company?

I doubt that Peres will murder Olmert like he murdered Rabin. Murdered Rabin was eligible to become a symbol, but Olmert's assassination would be simply shrugged off.
Consider, however, that Olmert is the only non-left politician (political machinator) of Peres or Beilin's caliber.

You again bring up the point about Olmert's irrational (at the international level) launch of the war last summer. As we all know, the entire effort was meant to divert national attention away from his brewing campaign finance scandals, and other local worries. Even to Israel's enemies the man is a danger and a menace, because he acts so unpredictably.

Even more than his evil decision to shed lots of blood on both sides to preserve his grip on power, Olmert's failure to prosecute the war proves his utter irresponsibility and unsuitability as a leader. A politician who opts to play the jingoist card in blood should be fairly sure that he (and his nation) will emerge victorious. Launching a war with inadequate planning, and then micro-managing the military when one has no military experience, is the work of an egotistical, power-mad moron, rather than a ruthless, Machiavellian leader; Olmert yet again proved his utter lack of leadership by not giving the IDF Central Command a free rein at least to manage the war that they were unready to fight. Clearly, the man is a disaster.</p?

Sadly, the one (and perhaps only) thing that Olmert is capable of is manipulating the Israeli oligarchs to keep his seat. A skill like that, by itself, is not worth very much, especially not to the Israeli public. Perhaps the best we can hope for is that President-elect Peres will decide that Olmert has outlived his usefulness, as Rabin did before him.... mi shemeiveen, yaveen
