Listen a Jewish leader would be great, and anyone with an ounce of understanding can see that Israel wouldn't need to be necessarily a "halachik state" in order to be a Jewish state, and there are many routes to get there within the boundaries of the Torah and Jewish law (I'm still waiting for someone to show me where in the Shulchan aruch it describes how a Jewish state and Jewish govt should be run). There is room for much creativity and ingenuity here.
_
It's a "religious boogeyman" that is thrown at people to make them fear Jewish identity or fear a leadership that believes in G-d or Jewish principles. It's not going to turn the state into a whole country of satmar colonies.
_
That being said, one must point out the obvious here.
Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef endorsed Oslo.
_
I will just leave it at that.

Whatever the case, we don't advocate an ultra-religious state, just a minimally religious one.

Obadiah,
What's wrong with making place for both secular and religious Jews in Israel?
(Personally I would be OK with business closures on Saturday, just don't force circumcision, and other religious rules on others.
I think it is insane to weaken the Jewish nation by creating a division between religious and non-religious Jews.
Please, Obadiah, use your gifts to inspire unity rather than division.

"Without the secular majority in Israel the Meah Shaarim jews would starve and would have no water, electricity, security and they would be living at the mercy of some Arab ruler."

That may be true, but without those Religious Israel would lose its Jewish Identity. The left is ready to sell our ancestry and would do so at every turn. That is why I feel safer as a Jew in America who vacations in Israel. Especially on a day like today when a murderer like Kuntar is released.

Hey Obadya!

I am not a leftist jew nor a rightist one - somwhere in the middle.

I am, how ever a Zionist one; I chose to live here and I don't need you to send me to Canada or someplace else so the Meah Shaarim rules can be applied in my neighbourhood.

Without the secular majority in Israel the Meah Shaarim jews would starve and would have no water, electricity, security and they would be living at the mercy of some Arab ruler.

This country may have not have the best political system and lots of things are inefficient and even unjust, but I would rather live under these conditions than in the "Utopia" of ultra religious system you advocate.

I don't like religions, to me all religious beliefs are stupid, still I would be totally OK with this:
"businesses closed on Sabbath, no leaven sold on Pesach, no Jews taxed to subsidize Arabs, and no Arabs spitting on Jews from the Temple Mount"
=
That's fine symbolic gesture, I can honor my for-fathers. But I would for example not want to circumcise children. I don't think it is state's business what people do with their private parts.
Also, it is not true that only religious Jews have any claim to Israel: Non-religious socialist were among the first pioneers in Palestine.
Exclusion of the huge Arab population from Israel, is important for survival of Jews religious and atheists alike.
So Obadiah, please get off this divisive discourse and work to unite us Jews, rather than divide.
=
You have brilliantly written about how Israel has restored dignity to all Jews, even those who live in the diaspora.

Certainly it is reasonable for the people of Mea Shearim to decide what is proper in their own neighborhood. And I think it is the height of hypocracy to denounce the Haridim for living on the dole. How many of their critics would work if they did not have to? These ctitics should look to themselves and the secular politicians they elected, who set up this situation.
