Pitty for us the story is repeating itself again and again.Tanach is full of examples, and it's very clear that the only limit for jews is the internal corruption. Josephus wrote a lot about this in a brillant manner, jews use to have a fragile memory. Prophets were sent all the time to warn us when the disrespect for us is reaching the boiling point.
