Great insights. One correction: "Territorial identity comes to the Palestinian Arabs a distant third after clan and village identity." Religious identity is probably equally strong with clan identity. They do think of themselves as Muslims and would support other Muslims in conflict with non-Muslims. Just re-read this old post. For that matter, is Iraq ready for statehood? Or Afghanistan? Or Lebanon? Or Syria, with a dictator from a minority clan? What we experiencing as "functioning statehood" in the Arab world is often a dictatorship supported by a brutal military repression. Saddam Hussein worked this way, the Mullahs work this way and, yes, Mubarak works this way. And, guess what, the people are going along with it. Who needs a state, if the people are fed disinformation? Soviet Russia survived on potatoes, vodka & disinformation for 70 years! Very sophisticated way of expressing what seems to be obvious.

That was what happened to the land, ravaged by Arabs who cared only to find the last bit of vegetation left that their goat herds hadn't already pulled up by the roots. Only the presence of Israelis living among the Palestinians, yes, out in the "so-called West Bank", will ever change them, if at all. It is hard, being "salt and light" to those who are "dead in their sins and trespasses", but like it or not, Israel was sovereignly placed here on planet earth to do just that.
