In response to the previous entry by Danny the Admin 2008 June 27, I took the time to copy the entire piece to seguay to a few observations about 3 such men that some of you may know personally: Dr. Mordechai Nissan and Dr. Yehudah Bohrer both of whom, atleast at one time, (remember, 1979 was 30 years ago!) professors of mine at the Hebrew University (Har ha Tzopheem)
BOTH, I say, were "Gush Emunim" types with Dr Bohrer the head rabbi at the yeshiva outside Ramallah, north of Jerusalem: BEIT EL.

I never knew just exactly where Mordechai lived, except that this 'brain trust' from Canada could have lived in a mansion and instead chose to make himself (to quote James Carville during the bro' bill clinton escapades:)
"Nu'uhn but trailer park trash"

The third is a former goy like me from Milwaulkee (WS), given name Ralph Frank, who called himself EPHRAIM and last time I heard, about 20 years ago or so, still lives on a settlement with the same moniker as his, located just north of Nablus --Shechem, so-called West Bank, where the original observation of the Feast of Tabernacles was a way of life as it will be once again someday: (Zechariah 14, especially 16-21 and contrast with the "original": Genesis 33, "for this reason he called the place succoth"
and especially follow on from 33:18 "...and Jacob came in peace..." until 35:5 "...and the terror of Elohim was on the cities that were all around them..."

Jacob and obviously the original 11 brothers, did not fall far from their SAHBA'S tree: Genesis 14

Oh for the days of living in booths and the fear of Elohim!

Ephraim, who started out learning how to be a welder on the kibbutz with his newly wed sabra wife, has been writing a blog for some time from the perspective he has as one of the first Gentiles to actually make aliyah (Jeremiah 31:6). His yeshiva like blog seguays back to Yehudah (all three have been, maybe still are, "trailer park trash" by choice : Hebrews 11:38-40.

Now that I'm a SABAH I get to test Dr Bohrer's observation: "You will be judged by your grandchildren. Even if you mess up as a father, you will have a second chance with their children."

And this from a man who, last time I saw him at Beit El inside his trailer where he lived with his wife and his 10 daughters. "All given names synonymous with Redemption."

Faith is contagious
By Obadiah Shoher

Many times I’ve seen zealous communists turn into religious Jews. Jews are inherently messianic, and long to reform societies for good. Once they saw redemption in communism, but after they were disappointed in that shining path, some turned to religion. Moshe Sneh, the late leader of Israeli communists, left a surprising testament declaring atheism to be nonsense.

I’m more concerned with another type of leftist—the cold cynics, equally unconcerned with social justice and religion. Even they long to fill their empty spiritual lives, and I know of many cases when rational minds, cold atheists, suddenly turned to religion upon encountering a very peculiar human being, the rarest of Jews: a truly believing rabbi. I’m blessed with knowing a handful of such wonderful people, and have witnessed instant conversions when rational people with excellent secular education were infected with Judaism after a thirty minute talk.

faith is contagious

Mass education doesn’t convince anyone. People are turned to particular ideas in two ways. One, massive propaganda by demagogues. Their rhetoric is always cheap, aimed at the mob’s lowest common denominator. They turn the masses into zealots, but their zeal doesn’t last long. In Russia and Iran, disillusionment came in just decades.

The second way is by intimate communication in which an honestly, totally, unquestionably believing rabbi inspires a few other Jews. Such efforts cannot be duplicated on mass scale, and cannot be carried out on DVD or TV broadcasts. They require a spark of the personal touch.

But where do we find such rabbis? They mostly belong to the bygone generation whose faces, not of this world, shine at us from old photographs. Our generation is much colder, though a few such wondrous rabbis are there. This type of rabbi doesn’t appear in large cities or in the global village permeated by mass media. They are a unique product of small homogeneous Jewish communities, ultra-comfortable in the moral sense, where people share values and loyalties, and big-city neuroses are unknown.

The next generation of real rabbis can only come from the settlements.

Is Shoher aware of Vienna Mike and the idea of Medinat Yehudah? I don't know if I can include links, but I can suggest that you Google "Virtual Medinat Yehudah" and read some of the entries. I would appreciate seeing an entry on this site in which Obadhiah Shoher comments on this other blogger's innovative and immensely controversial idea.

Thus saith Eli of Toronto:

Great comment, Abushy.
I believe that in the future the “petro-dollar” wealth would become the curse of arab nations and the reason of demise of that Satanic culture. They will go back to “the clots” that they once were, G-d willing.

"Todah la El, chavair. Baruch ha Shem. Or as the folks around here with names that would inspire the original missionary to India, aka "Christ-bearer" Columbus (eg "hey-zeus":Jesus or Mary his mother)>>> "Glory a Deos!" Praise the Lord, bro'.

WHEN I worked in Daliyat el Carmel in the mid-'80's WHEN the price of oil hovered around $10 a barrel, WHEN East Texas (I was told when I returned 2 years later) turned from once being the largest oilfield on planet earth (1930-1973)to almost an oilfield ghost town over night, and WHEN Lapidoth, Israel's nationalized oil exploration enterprise was reduced to the handful of toolpushers made roughnecks and who had to put up with me and WHEN we managed to get stuck to the tune of losing the well, things looked rough.

The oil spoken of as part of Jacob's son's inheritance (eg "tovel b'shemen raglo" {"he will dip his foot in oil"} is near @ hand. That is the reason, in part for the invasion "for a spOIL"? ask the neighboring states as Gog and Magog come down as per Ezekiel 38-39 to their Islamic destruction.

In the meantime, this article that Obadiah wrote is an example of the prophecy that "he will be a wild donkey of a man and everyone's hand will be against him and he them"

"The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity" observed the late great Abba Eban. They are the most well heeled, best educated and blessed in every other demographic category imaginable among their Arab "brothers". And this despite being in a land that, here to for, does NOT share in the petro-dollar wealth of most of their Middle Eastern "kinsmen".

The reason, of course, for this self-hatred, we are told, is that they have been forced, kicking and screaming (in a philosophical sense) to rub shoulders with those unclean, treacherous and cursed animals (according to Allah in his holy book) who must be destroyed. Yet it is these same Jewish "monkeys and pigs" who have oximoronically given the Arab people who hate them inveterately, the ONLY opportunities for Western cultural greatness that is NO WHERE to be found in ANY of the other 57 Islamic and/or (most especially) Arab Moslem states...as per your basic, but eloquently enumerated observations above.

Israel, as the "occupying monkey" and so called, 'Goliath vs the poor palestinian arab shepherd boy', has actually shielded and protected the Arabs under their authority from the "tender mercies" of their brutally cruel brothers. But the Islamic doctrine of the theological impossibility (in the words of the Quran) of a resurrected, 'King David'-like nation of Israel, that has just come on the world scene once again, and as prophetically predicted...this is the stuff of Moslem mental pinballs going tilt. And oh, which, by its very re-existence as a re-gathered and miraculous "Chosen People", totally exposes the fact that the worldview of their Arab, inveterate, "philistinian", Islamic eternal enmity to the Jew, is not only built upon sand but is way overdue to the judgment of Yahveh Tzevahot upon all who curse the Jew. That is, to all who willfully try to annul the eternal insurance policy given by Yahveh to the same Abraham the Moslem claims to claim as his own father too.

But fear not. Not ALL have missed the mark or opportunity, as observed Abba Eban, even though they may indeed be just a tithing few. The Druze of Daliyat al Carmel, who while once being Moslems a milenium ago in Egypt, and who remain as demographically Arab as any other Middle Eastern non Jew, have, for instance, with the 'Magan Davids' they proudly post on their gates, doorposts and homes, put "paid" to the notion that it is impossible to live beside the Jewish people without inevitably reacting in an automatic Arab, epileptic like, knee-jerk hatred for the Jew...that is second only to the perverse, cannibalistic hunger and thirst---for their own flesh and blood.

"if the situation were unbearable to Palestinian Arabs, they would have accepted Israeli offers."

That is probably true, but would it have been good for the Jews?

Your email is really quite good. When I first started to receive it, a year or so ago, I did not have the time to follow your writings and generally ignored your observations. In the last couple of months I have begun to read carefully what you write and you have a vast and very competent knowledge of Israel and the Middle-East. In fact, your knowledge greatly surprises me. You have many details that are not widely known and when known, are known only to a limited number of individuals. Now, I read each of your emails carefully. I am very impressed with the quality of your knowledge, background experience, competency to comment and accuracy of your conclusions. You are "very good", you must be an experienced professional of wide personal experience with very astute and accurate observations.
