As a Mizrahi guy, I am totally against Anyone praying to dead rabbis, or praying at the tombs of dead rabbis. It is Total idolatry, as far as I am concerned.

You mean candles, I see. That's not exactly an offering, but other than that technicality I agree with fully. The cult is abominable. Prayers to the Rebbe are another example.

to Danny: Haven't you seen mizrahi rabbis offering candles in a big pire at cemeteries? I did. Rabbis laying on thombs and praying to dead rabbis? I did. But this is not new, sice is inherited from arab countries. There is written testimony of this already by 16th century. I can cite them if you want. About Ovadiah's post, I never said he defends idolatry. I just said he could delight us with some more than issues so elaborated already by sociologists.
To Alain: Danny is right, what is different if the vitcongs were beheaded or sprayed with napalm? Death is death. Since you cannot go further to death during war, beheading has several meanings for warriors, but is just dialectics.

To Alain: American massacres of the Vietnamese, though rare and isolated incidents, surely exceed the number of beheadings. Americans did demand a conversion: of commi and communalist Viets to the religion of democracy.

To Chaim: what are the offerings burnt in cemeteries?
Obadiah isn't defending the idolatrious behavior of many rabbis. Myself, I saw him arguing with a major Chabad official about portrait of the Rebbe. But consider that even mystical cults had many overt practices. Complete trascendence of divine service is beyond human.

Please ovadiah differentiate between religion(superfluous rites) and beliefs. Modern religions are re-combinations of old rites, new habits and local beliefs. Of course man need something to believe. It comes from the beggining, when G-d talked with men in a direct way. Generations after generations this knowledge was washing itself, trough new habits, migration and the eternal need of menabout trusting on man rather than G-d. And this is a way of idolatry too. Perhaps in Israel today people does not rely on the Army more than G-d? Idolatry. There isn't dead cults as rabbis rallying and praying and burning offerings on cemetery? Idolatry. Kissing the torah? Pictures of deceased rabbis, etc? And I'm just talking about idolatry among jews, go figure among the goim!
It's right Religion gives people a hope, but just in a psicologic way. Auto-hypnosis,suggestion common
beliefs and sense of belonging to a group. But
Ovadiah's level of discussion I think is beyond simple sociological dogmas. Marx wrote a lot about religion and masses. Ovadiah, please write about jewish problems, I like it very much..

While I agree in general with this article, I must take exception to the beginning where Americans fighting in Vietnam for G-d and country are compared to the Muslims. The Americans did not go around beheading any and all "infidels" nor did they ever demand conversion of others. No other group behaves as the Muslims whose ideology is based on intolerance and yet demands the conquest of the world in the name of Islam.
