Iran needs the weapon, or to lead the world into believing it has the capability to, in order to protect itself from the Americans on either side of its borders. It is a matter of self-interest, and I fear Israel will self-destruct with all this paranoia of being attacked. Israel has to try to reach out to its Middle Eastern neighbours if is to survive in the long-term. Iran, these days, is highly esteemed in the Mid East for being morally motivated , and the chances of it using a nuclear weapon is as high as India. Iran will have a lot to lose if it puts itself in this situation, unlike Kim Jung Ill whose people are starving and whose trade links are miniscule and only line his pockets. No amount of kinship with the Americans and Europeans will help in the lon-run. Strategically, Iran is too powerful with friends in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon (Shia connection) Russia, China (trade deals) and Europe (cultural ties) for Israel to even talk of attack. Also, as an Iranian who visits Iran regularly, although Ahmadienejad is anti-Israel, he likens this to being anti-South African Government Arpatheid, not anti-Jewish. I honestly wholly love my country, and Israel, but not either government.
