The error Clinton made was withdrawing the AC-130 gunships which assured even the smallest US ground unit that massive fire superiority would be available.

The error the military planners made was to continue operations as usual when the gunships were not there. The locals had not resisted in a while, as the gunships had prevented effective resistance.

Just a note: 18 US soldiers died, but it cost some 5,000 locals, even without the gunships. In part that was because other US service men were able to coopt Pakistani M-113 light armored vehicles, and in part because the US Rangers were darned good at hitting their targets.

Retaliation is not necessary if you win.

To flk: Obadiah doesn't use the word "genocide" about Somalia. The war, you're right, was originally between the clans. Now it is dressed in religious terms and fed on Islamic militancy. That's just what Obadiah says.

I think you misunderstand the rivalry/hate between somalia and ethiopia. Its not an issue of muslims versus christians but a case of 2 rival peoples. What escalates the issue further more is the fact that ethiopia is a land locked country so by siding with the so called government they will be able to recieve funds from the US for apparently fighting terrorism (terrorism is synonomous with islam if you havent figured that out by now :P) and they are also thinking fi they are able to keep this excuse for a government which btw the UN does not recognise they might be getting some favours in the form of use of ports etx. Btw i would recommend you to have a look @ war between somalia and ethiopia 1972........(cold war?).I would also like to mention that Somalia is not like some of the other african countries where 2/3 different types of people live together...somalians are all one people whose origins can be counted back in few forefathers. The forefathers of all these clans you hear of were brothers...so to say genocide is taking place in somalia is to prove how ignorant one is of the situation. The only reason this civil war has gone on for so long in somalia is because there have been no credible leader to lead all the clans.... the icu so far have brought order and somewhat resemblance of peace. But then again this is a machiavellian blogging....so one shouldnt be getting heated under the collar :Ptaa

You're misusing the word "genocide" which has clear legal definition. The US intervention in Somalia was to stop genocide rather than promote it.Was it necessary for America to intervene in Somalia? That's another question. Possibly, that was unnecessary. But once experienced some losses, Americans have two options: retaliate forcefully or leave the laurels to guerrillas. Clinton chose the latter approach, and effectively promoted the guerrillas. Not intervening in Somalia would have been better than intervening and running away.I would say, "fewer Islamic militants" are definitely better.

Why the hell Clinton should "retaliate" ?! IIRC nobody was attacking and/or invading America. WTF american soldiers was doing there? You're building on idea that "fewer Muslims is better", but that's not called "retaliate".Correct word is "genocide". Nothing to be ashamed of, right?
