Under the Jewish law set out in the Torah and reiterated by Maimonides, it is a capital offense to preach any other religion in the Land of Israel.

So what about the non Jews that would jump at the chance to move to israel. Israel is most certainly missing out on the millions of Christians that not only support the state of Israel, but would die to save it.

As to Israeli Immigrants, I to this day do not understand why the government of Israel rejects those who though they cannot prove Jewish decent have very real and true Jewish hearts. Hopefully that will change. As to democracy. I believe we have been deceived into believing that all men are created equal in Elohim's eyes and this is democracy. Yes, on the surface, that is so, but the other side of the coin is Capitalism: the right of might: the Walmart legacy: whereby those with the power to buy cheap and sell at prices you cannot compete with rule: and those without the power succumb to those who rule. Democracy is a beautiful thing, and Capitalism is as well when controlled and not allowed to run rampant and devour the land and the masses, but its seems that the more Capitalism you have then the less Democracy you end up having in a society of good and well meaning people. I support Democracy and I also support Capitalism kept in check by the will of the people and not by the hands of the greedy who desire to capitalize from the weaknesses of the system which has made our Great Nation great.

Best to look this up Ray since it's quite a complicated issue but suffice to say in short, we are a Republic!

If you really are interest, I can send you some links that might be of interest to you but consider this for a moment, John Adams was a Federalist while Jefferson was what would be considered a Republican today. Meaning, Adams was for more government while Jefferson was for states rights. Hope that helps a little?

thanks for responding.

*Define "Palestinian-occupied areas".

*"Israeli oligarchs supply Palestinians with fuel". Where is there proof of this? The Israeli govt. themselves provides fuel/electricity.

As for high-end imported goods, who cares if they have a monopoly? It's a minute market. Besides, whats stopping the their leaders from importing high-end products themselves?

*"Consider how many ex-Shabak officers had business in Gaza". Are you referring to before the expulsion from Gaza? If so, its natural that the citizens of that area would do business there! Ibid the Judah and Samaria.

*What does Danny Yatom in Angola have to do with anything?

About monopolies, maybe it needs to be clarified that we're talking of Palestinian-occupied areas. Israeli oligarchs supply Palestinians with fuel and most of high-ticket imported goods. No, there is no implication that we prevent Palestinians from doing other profitable businesses.
Consider how many ex-Shabak officers had business in Gaza, and now have in the West Bank. Or take Danny Yatom who works with Levaev in Angola.
There is no implication that free market economy would give support only to right-wingers. Rather, many of the businessmen not affiliated with government would support right-wingers. It happened in all countries: independent bourgeoisie overwhelmingly supports conservatives.
No, I don't think Israel is a [liberal] democracy. In fact, we have repeatedly disputed this delusion popular among American Jews.

I agree with your article's first paragraph, but have questions about things in paragraphs 2 and 3. A bit of background about myself: I've been living in Israel for 8 years from South Africa. I was in a unit in the paratroops of the Israeli army and I also live on a yishuv in the "occupied" territories.

*"IDF presence in the West Bank gives Jewish oligarchs profitable monopolies". Errmm, that's a pretty ludicrous statement. Explain why you think this is?
If your reason is that we this prevents "palestinians" doing business, thats bullshit. Come to where I live and stand by the road. You quickly lose count how many arabs have brand-new expensive cars, how many trucks drive by with arab produce, arab building materials, etc.

*"Both active-duty and retired security officers further oligarchs’ interests abroad." Ludicrous statement # 2. Explain how this one works...

*"Free market economy will produce independent businessmen who will sponsor right-wing parties". Ludicrous statement # 3. FME will obviously produce independent businessmen, is it does everywhere. But why would they only support right-wing parties?

*"Both government and big businesses resist economic liberalization." I definitely agree with you here! They're like the mafia, trying to keep their own interests safe.

As for israel being a Democracy, wow, you better rethink that! No freedom of speech (sure, the arabs have as much free speech as they want, but not Jews. Ahmad Tibi and Talab El-Sana yes, Meir Kahane no???), no free and fair elections (as you said above, oligarch's and all), no due process in the court system!

It is apocryphal, attributed to Franklin: "Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner; liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote."
