Interesting since Islam follows Karaite practice.

Descent is patrilineal from the father to the son and according to Sharia, the wife and children are the property of the father.

In ancient cultures, the paterfamilias defined the family's existence and guided its values.

Judaism as we now have it looks to the mother. It no longer has a father figure.

According to the ancient definition, I am a Jew because my father was a Jew.

This incidentally is the Karaite and not the rabbinical view.

Jewishness is paternal, but not for the reasons cited here.

In biblical times, the women and sons were PROPERTY of the husband. So a woman is property of his father or eldest son, up to a man buys her. If the man divorces, the man RETURNS her to her parents house. Children are property of the father also.
The Tanach is full of cites about patrilineal ascendence, not just one of maternal ascendence.
Why? because, Hebrew condition is a legacy that needs to be confirmed through Israel people pacts with our G-d.
But rabbis changed all this somewhere in Middle Ages in order to exert more control over decent bnei Israel.
Not a single argument can be made and stand matrilineal favor. If someone has one, please write it here.
