Interesting post; I agree with everything I've read from you so far. FYI, I think your post has a typo--you say two classes of weak beings who inspire compassion but seem to ennumberate three.

Hey, I think this post is interesting. I think it's probably valid to a great extent, unfortunately. If you want to e-mail me sometime, you have my information.
Thanks,

I am a Buddhist, used to live in Jerusalem for 5 years..
I have seen the conflict with my own eyes, and 95% of the things you speak of here are nonsense... yes, the Israeli government is corrupted and I hate it just as much as you do.
There is a reason why Israel is showing weakness, and that is the global pressure.
Every time Israeli forces strike the Muslims, other countries start screaming that Israel in un-fair.. and that it is using it's powers negatively... there is no leadership in Israel, the prime minister is a looser, the security minister is a looser, and that's why I moved back to new York, because I hate to see that 5 people are making a bad name for Jewish people everywhere... just like a lot of Americans hate bush right now. For what he is doing in Iraq, and he is making a bad name for all of us (I say us because I am an American citizen)
I think it's unfair of you to judge people based on their leaders, and I really do hope that the situation in the middle east improves, so I can go back and visit Israel, it's really is a beautiful country.. I recommend it.
But until that whole mess improves, I am not going into that dreadful country.

Bless you all...

ALthough I agree with your final comment of:

"The lessons of European anti-Semitism fully apply to Israel’s coexistence with Muslims."

I disagree with your assertion That the Bible portrays Jews as weak. Maybe it's just my own modern day interpretation but I see the Jews as perfect examples of humanity, both ancient and modern. Success and failure are represented Biblically. We see the constant struggle that man has with G-d and itself. As in real life, more people fall than rise. However, the Biblical story of the Jew always represented, to me, an unwillingness to surrender to any binding that other people attempted to place on them. Yes, there were portions of Jews who failed miserably but there was always someone willing to stand up and face evil.

My cynical side will claim that this person was making a name for themself. My more romantically inclined side would believe that this person or people was acting in this manner because it was right and what G-d wanted.

While I strongly believe that the reason for anti-Semitism is due to a much deeper rebellion against G-d and moral values, I do agree that the on-going weakness of Israeli leaders/politicians wins nothing but contempt. It seems that they think showing weakness under the guise of restraint will curry them favour on the international scene, yet reality proves them wrong.
