What is this?
What r u talking about?
My god...!!!
Should we understand that any party in this world fithing to free from occupation, has been sexually abused in its childhood??
The problem with u, american citizens, is that u r not understanding anything about ME conflict.
And the small u know, and think u know, is what your media, fully influenced by sionist lobbies, allow u to know, and oblige u to understand and believe.

*edit some typo may lead to misunderstanding..
the quotes(bold), i take from comment no #20 and #10
consider to read the full sentences on the comments.

i've read roughly yours/this blog .PDF, history showns that..even how freethinkers/atheist/realist/modernist someone is, religions will shamely be used to justify their action(s).

this is just my personal views. Shalom.

Respect to Danny for such good administration!
this thread is really educating.
Its true of what Danny says about Hamas, they offer truce but Zionist is war hungry! Hamas is truly based on Islam. Hamas is the nightmare for some so-called moderate/secularist Islamic state around the globe.
The zionist never hold on the their words, the world always knows.

some quotes from the thread, that i find really shows why the situation there will never be changed..

<b>"The Muslims always thought of us as equals - never as children of pigs and demons,"</b>

i've never heard(religiously, politically) of this, but i do read the zionist do consider others than Jews are animals.

<b>".....even without any goals. Most of them have been sexually abused in their childhood and deep down may want to fight to take revenge, a glorious death is a great escape from a life in shame."</b>

this is really good compositions. For islamophobic writings

i wonder why the word zionism never used here, in this thread.

Hail Danny for such cool blog.

So far Hamas is the only Palestinian faction ever that genuinely tried to impose civil order on Gaza and stop attacks on Israel (until the recent flare-up). Hamas also honestly declared that an Islamic organization cannot sign peace with Jewish state, but only long-term truce - and is prepared to do so.

"We may not like Hamas, but there is no alternative to negotiating with it."

Who do you mean, "we"? Israel can't negotiate with Hamas, now or ever, as the only thing Hamas will settle for is the destruction of Israel and the world knows this.

What Israel will eventually end up doing is nuking them along with Iran and Syria. The world knows this, too.

Danny,
Secondly your question is meaningful and I understand what you are aiming at. And you are right as it is true that historically religions have been the foundation from which people developed their understanding of the world, their moral philosophy, law , value systems and the day-to-day way of living live.
So certainly Judaism was that shared foundation for Jews, Just like Hinduism was for Indians. However the word foundation is inaccurate, because the religions themselves also grew out of what preceded them. Judaism included the experience and wisdom of not only Jewish people, but also elder cultures that preceded them, particularly Sumerian, Egyptian and ancient Semitic cultures.
Just like the Arian Indians adopted much of the Hindu religious culture from the Dravidian predecessors.
=
Before religions got written down and codified they were more flexible and better able to adjust to changes. After being written down as "holy" books they became ossified, and lag behind development.
In order to make this inquiry more objective and less emotional, I 'd like to use the example of Hindu's, rather than our own nation:
Today, it is possible to belong to Hindu culture without believing in a single silly storiy about Shiva, Ganesh and Vishnu, etc, and without necessarily observing the various colorful rituals. In fact it is perfectly possible possible to be an Atheist and still be part of Hindu culture. There is a certain very deep characteristic way about the Hindu. A different and unique way of thinking and of discussing and debating. It seems like a they have a somewhat "different sort of logic" out of lack of better description.
This "different logic" could be exemplified by Ramanujan, one of the most remarkable mathematicians in the whole history.
=
Quite simmilarly, Jews, because of their religious past as well as because of the unique experience of living over thousand of years as a hated minority scattered through the world,
have, have developed a unique way of thinking and being. It is not quite easy to say what it is, yet it is discernible.

Danny, First I would like to to remind you that Jews in the East and West Europe were not two different people, there was constant interchange. Jews came to Eastern Europe from Western Europe during the Plague and Crusader wars. There was always connection, and East European Jews moved back to West when persecutions in the West eased up, and when persecution in the Eastern Europe increased.
Likewise there have been movements between the the Sephardi Jews and Ashkenazim. Many Jews from Spain went to Lithuania, Poland and other European countries. Mother of Niels Bohr (one the one of the founders of Quantum Mechanics, was a DANISH Sephardic Jew, as was the father of the British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. And so was of course Baruch Spinoza who was lived in France and then in Holland. Likewise, European Jews moved to Turkey and other Muslim countries. The two branches of Jews were never separated culturally.

Please explain that mysterious "Jewish culture" to me in non-religious terms. Specifically, what is the shared culture between Ashkenazi and Sephardi, Eastern European and French Jews?

Danny,
I think it is unfair of you to claim that Jews want to be in Israel only for religious reasons. Most of people who laid foundations of Israel were not religious. They were nationalistic. They were also very realistic, they realized that in the world where all other nations have their national states, Jews will be persecuted as strangers. Jews are truly a nation historically, culturally, linguistically, and in every other way, not just religiously.
=
Palestinians, on the other hand, are much more identified with being Arabs and Muslim than with being "Palestinian" . Majority of they would be just more than happy to be Syrian or Jordanian provided that they were treated fairly and had good material conditions in those countries. Disappearance of the Palestinian identity will not be felt as a loss, as there is very little that can be considered uniquely "Palestinian". Not more than "uniquely Houstonian". If you resettle people from Houston to Dallas, give them place to live and jobs; they will get over the loss of their "Houstonian identity.
=
This shows that the situation between Jews and "Palestinians" is not symmetrical: Removing Jews from Israel would result in the loss of a culture that is unique in the whole world.

Max: Jewish leaders actually toyed with the idea of bi-national Jewish-Arab state, but Arabs massacred Jews in 1920-40s nonetheless. So it's not about us taking the Arab land, but merely settling in it. No one likes the aliens inundating his apartment, town, or country - and Palestinian Arabs are no exception. Unlike other Jews around, we're fairly clear that Palestinian Arabs are right, in their own world view, to fight the Jews. And Jews, who need a state for religious reasons, are right to fight the Arabs - in our own world view.
