They must learn to kill in cold blood. Even a certain sense of compassion is not out of place. It is like General Patton said in the movie, something like: "I really feel sorry for those poor bastards who are going against my soldiers. We are going massacre them, we are going to grease our tanks driving right through them." There is no sadism implied. No anger either. Just the reality of human condition.
