I'm sadend by the fact that the left has so dominantly taken over what the morals of America should be, but i think if the free spirit endures the argument will change and moral values may be restored. By free spirit i mean the right will soon have the power to grow and draw the lines a clearer between right and wrong.

I think the author was talking about the societal self-censorship. Unfortunately, we live in the days when the government has taken over this with disastrous effects :(

Ambika, if I now understand you correctly we both agree that government should not be involved in censoring what people think or say. Inciting people to rape, murder and violence is already covered in criminal law and has nothing to do with free speech.

At present my prayers are for the people of Mumbai, in particular the victims and their families of this barbaric evil act. There is never justification for such evil and it must never ever be excused or tolerated.

Alain,
I fear that we are walking in parallel lines right now. And as someone living in India currently, but who has also lived in both the western world and the middle east, i understand and appreciate only too well the difference you point out. And I am sorry you feel that I do not understand these differences, but that is purely your assumption and I shall leave you to it. I am not entirely sure why you are confused by what I said earlier, but it seems that there is a lack of understanding on both our parts.
And i really have to point out, that just because I used the cartoons as an example i have not granted any special status to muslims or to anyone for that matter. I have seen enough cartoons and drawings of hindu gods on shirts worn by the hippies all over parts of california, i would put that in the same bracket. and by all means lets include cartoons insulting the jews and the christians, and all other religions in the same vein. and not once did i say, implied or otherwise, that it is ok for a government agency dictate such rules and eregulations.
As I write, right sitting in bombay, now it would be very easy for me to say, lets have my government impose as many restrictions as needed, but even having seen everything unfold in this city, i still wont.

looks like another example of the love of the muslims has occurred in Mumbai, India! The muslim terrorists just could not walk away from the insults! :-(

Pray to Hashem for the protection and healing of all the Jews in Mumbai, India.

Israeli court sentenced a Jewish woman Tanya Soskina to three years in jail for drawing and plastering a cartoon picturing Mohammed as pig.
Actually, the fellow who murdered an entire Jewish tribe is worse than a pig.

Ambika, you do not seem to understand the major difference between people choosing self-restraint and self-discipline of their own free will and a government that will tell you what you can think and say and that will prosecute you for not obeying. If you shout obscenities at me in anger, I have the choice to ignore you and walk away or to confront you. Should you assault me physically, there is already a law against that. There is no need for another law, usually called hate crime, which grants special status to selected groups depending on the latest whim of authorities. I oppose such a law just as I strongly oppose laws created to deal with "hate speech".

While I understand your comments concerning the cartoons, it appears that you are willing to grant special status to Islam since you ignore all the cartoons insulting Jews and Christians. I would include Hindus and Buddhists except that I have not seen cartoons insulting them or their beliefs. Still the same thing applies in that it is wrong and dangerous to have a government agency treating the publishing of such cartoons as a crime.

yes, Alain, true freedom of speech means some indeed might get offended, but i think a certain level of sensibility needs to prevail. I am not going to stand there and shout obsceneties at you, and then say oh i'm sorry but its my freedom of speech. and no i dont beleive that all muslims or all of anybody is a terrorist, but that cartoon offended somones sensibilities. now i am not also saying that lets tip toe around each other, but there is a line, which is very circumstantial that people need to be aware of. its not a moral or religious thing, its just a basic respect for the person standing in front of you.
