This unity invokes the Divine presence. The Isreali goverment forces this unity of the people since kicking jews out of their houses and abandoning the people in the south to missles. As oil is crushed from the olives a true leader will be forced from all of this and this is "a" Divine way of unfolding. I was an atheist and returned to Judaism for many reasons, one of which, as you stated, had to do with a spiritual vacuum. Luckily, I had a yeshiva background and so the road back was far easier than if I hadn't. Additionally, there are communists that are NOT atheists. They don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. I returned not because I was disillusioned with Communism; I was disillusioned with atheism.
