Yesterday I met with a Jewish baron. One of those guys Kahane called Jewish barons. A reputable entrepreneur and philanthropist who made his fortune by very questionable means. Now he is a prominent figure in the Jewish community.
Why do we sacrifice our Jewish conscience and sense of justice for dirty donations? Many prefer not to see them as dirty, but that is just closing our eyes to the obvious.
The Torah prescribes communal charity only in extreme circumstances, to sustain widows and orphans. It is not accidental that only basic produce is tithed. Recipients of charity are entitled to no more than basic survival goods. Jews can provide that much by the small donations of honest hard-working people.
Shouldn’t we just stop accepting money from questionable sources, even for communal benefit? Jewish values must be above money, even moreso since inefficient administrators often waste the donations.
Shouldn’t we stop letting wealthy donors take the front places in almost all synagogues, especially they rarely abide by the law? Too many synagogues became dens of thieves.
Many times I have seen people leave synagogue on Shabbat and drive to the office. We are commanded to expunge evil from our society. Why do we pamper evildoers?
