The big problem is that in the West people have bought into the idea that Palestinians have equal right to a country as Jews. This idea is at the root of the major problems that Israel is facing. Without this idea, Palestinians would long ago have been transfered.

And you are right, they are very much like us, and if we are to prevail, we need to understand this. However it is also important to understand the ways in which they are NOT like:

Jews are a real nation, with unique culture, history, language, religion. Jews suffered tremendously for centuries trying to presevre their national character. History of the last 3000 years, shows that Jews need a state to protect their survival as a unique nation.

Palestinians, on the other hand, are just Arab people. No history, culture, religion, or language distinguishes them significantly from other Arabs. Their identity is Arab-Muslim, in the first place, and they can be perfectly happy just living life as Arabs in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, or any other Arab state.

Looking objectively, from general human perspective disappearances of the Jews as nation and culture, will be a great loss to humanity. On the other hand, national disappearance of “Palestinian nation” will not be a loss for the humanity, just like loss of Palestinian identity, will not mean much to the Palestinian Arabs.
