This is a deeply flawed and dangerous belief - stemming, as it does, from individuals who have lost all sense of what 'to be a Jew' really is all about. Even though these types adopt the ideological fashions of the 'nations' to justify their policies of appeasement and compromise so as to 'get along', the 'world' just doesn't buy it. They know what are at a gut level, even if they don't comprehend it - and despite the cheap attempts by some of us to 'fit in' with them. Assimilation of the diaspora Jews is only partial - and will always only be partial. Death is certainly one result of these attempts to 'fit in' - whether physical or spiritual - or both. And then there is exodus and return, for the fortunate. For a Jew is a landless and a nomadic people - Israel is not strictly about physical land and borders - though there IS that reflection of a reality far more expansive. We should remember that we aren't 'at home' in this world or any world - and our mission isn't to 'settle down' but to expand, with all that means and implies. This is what the people of 'the world' - the nations - resist and fear - and why some Jews also resist and fear. The 'hope and 'change' of Jewish being and interaction with creation is not for the faint or weak of heart.
