Yes, but the problem in respecting the people's rights is, what to do when the perceived rights conflict? Both Jews and Arabs claim Jerusalem.

There is not a day that goes by when my prayers dont include the words restraint and reason. And then again I read the news only to find that our leaders dont seem to understand either of these two words. People are dying and no one can tell me why. Surely no one believes that under Sadaams rule terrorists had found a safe haven in Iraq. Rather men like Sadaam were not viewed by the fundamentalists as good muslims. They had a very least a short lifespan in Iraq as they threatened the status quo. So if not terrorism, or weapons of mass destruction why did we invade Iraq? Perhaps our leaders should view a bit of recent history as the President asks congress for another 100billion for the war in Iraq. Seems like our enemies have learned their lessons well. They defeated the old Soviet Union by bankrupting one of the largest war machines ever known. Now here we are less than 2 decades later making the same mistake. We have not learned that ideas cannot be defeated with a bullet. You can kill the messenger but the idea just grows and grows. Answers? Look at what we have done right and wrong. Admit our wrongs and try to make them right. The rest of the world is no different that you or me. We have a shared concept of just and unjust. Its time the USA lived up to its promise and did the right things for the right reasons. Stop supporting those who violate their peoples rights. Take away the my way or the highway mentality that all to often is linked to the aid packages we offer. Most of all remember that it is us we the people who govern not a few politicians. For what its worth thats my two cents.
