Israel pushes disease deep into the body. Or hides a sack of grenades under the floor. And is happy.

It was a victory to get Hamas into the Palestinian government. The world saw that the Palestinians do want to destroy Israel, that they argue about the means, not the end. The West could engage Hamas in political dialogue and turn the guerillas into inefficient corrupt politicians, eventually to be discredited. That wonderful scenario ran amok when the US government discovered it couldn’t legally deal with a terrorist group. Politics is the art of dealing with everyone, particularly with enemies.

To satisfy the US, Abbas pushes Hamas out of the government. The only place Hamas can go is underground. Abbas will fail on economic improvement and won’t be popular. Palestinians will see his peace treaty with Israel as collaborationist and repeal it, just as the peace treaty with Lebanon was repealed. Hamas, not associated with government corruption, economic failures, and collaboration, would become still more popular.
